Provena Health is a Catholic healthcare system based in suburban Chicago co-sponsored by three religious congregations: the Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Heart, Frankfort, Illinois; the Sisters of the Holy Heart of Mary, Kankakee, Illinois; and the Sisters of Mercy, Chicago, Illinois. The System consists of six hospitals located in suburban Chicago and central Illinois, a Senior Services division of twelve long-term care facilities, and a Home Health division. The System has total assets of $1.3 billion and net revenues of $940 million.
Major Accomplishments:
1. Extensively restructured the System Office reducing corporate overhead, realigning corporate functions and services to increase the value of the System Office to the operating entities, and recruited the following key corporate leaders: Chief Financial Officer; Chief Clinical Officer (Quality and Clinical Resource Management); Vice President, Strategy and Business Development; Chief Information Officer; Vice President, Mission and Leadership Development. 2. Significantly improved the financial performance of the System during my first two years as CEO moving the organization from an operating loss of $28.4 million in FY01 (12/31/01) to an operating gain of $1.4 million in FY02 to an operating gain of $24.5 million (2.7%) in FY03 (12/31/03) -- a greater than $50 million turnaround in two years. The FY 04 operating gain was $17 million (2.3%). Total EBIDA (earnings before interest, depreciation, and amortization) increased from $37.8 million in FY02 to $108.6 million in FY04. Total cash flow increased from $46.2 million in FY02 to $100 million in FY04. The operating gain for FY05 (12/31/05) was $31.3 million (3%). 3. Significantly strengthened leadership at the entity level through the successful recruitment of CEOs at all six hospitals. 4. Implemented a system-wide strategic plan which focused the organization on three strategic goals -- quality, growth, and stewardship -- and clarified our core business -- patient and resident care. 5. As a result of the strategic plan, successfully divested non-core assets including an insurance plan, physician practices, various for-profit ventures, and properties. 6. Established a system-wide advocacy function in order to strengthen lobbying efforts at the state and federal levels. 7. Significantly strengthened accountability throughout the system through the implementation of an effective Management Incentive Plan and the development of a System Accountability Reporting process which delineates the value of corporate services. 8. Significantly strengthened the quality of the System Board through the successful recruitment of several new Board members and restructuring the Board Committee structure. 9. In 2003, initiated a system-wide leadership development program which includes over 600 leaders throughout the System. 10. Following the recruitment of my Chief Clinical Officer in 2002, intensified the focus and formalized quality and patient safety system-wide through education, training, recruitment of quality leaders, development of measurement tools and targets, and enhanced accountability through the development of goals and objectives as part of our performance evaluation process for leaders throughout the System.

Catholic Healthcare West Arizona is a division of Catholic Health West one of the largest health systems in the West with 48 hospitals in Arizona, California and Nevada. CHW AZ is an integrated health care delivery system composed of St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, a 477-bed tertiary teaching hospital with a Level I Trauma Center; Barrow Neurological Institute, one of the worlds leading institutions for neuroscience research treatment and rehabilitation for neurological illness and injury; and Chandler Regional Hospital, a 149-bed facility located in Chandler, Arizona, one of the fastest growing communities in the country.

Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI) is one of the largest healthcare systems in the country with 68 hospitals, 48 long-term care/assisted-living/residential units, $6.1 billion in assets, $5 billion in total operating revenues (FY 1998). CHI is represented in 22 states throughout the country.
I served as one of three Group Presidents. My responsibilities included 15 hospitals and 5 long-term care/assisted living facilities in the following states: Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Ohio, Colorado, and New Mexico with total assets in FY 1998 of $1.8 billion and $1.6 billion in gross revenues.
October, 1995 - June, 1997 University of Pennsylvania Health System, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Senior Vice President for Hospital Operations
The University of Pennsylvania Health System is one of the leading academic health centers in the country. Components of the Health System include: Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, the School of Medicine, the Clinical Practices of the University of Pennsylvania (faculty practice plan of approximately 700 M.D.s), Presbyterian Medical Center, Pennsylvania Hospital, Clinical Care Associates ( a primary care network of approximately 220 M.D.s), six hospital/health system affiliates, long-term care, home health, and hospice programs.
As Senior Vice President for Hospital Operations, I was the senior executive officer responsible for the hospitals, health services, and corporate services (human resources, information systems, facilities management, network operations). The total operating expense budget for which I was responsible was in excess of $1 billion.
September, 1991 - October, 1995 Saint Joseph’s Health System, Atlanta, Georgia President and Chief Executive Officer
Saint Joseph’s Health System is the parent holding company of Saint Joseph’s Hospital of Atlanta sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy, Baltimore Regional Community and a member of Catholic Health East. Based on fiscal year 1994 audited data (ending 12/31/94), the corporation had total assets of $310 million.

Major Accomplishments:
1. Significantly improved the financial performance of the hospital during my tenure, increasing the operating margin from 6% to 12%. 2. Significantly expanded the cardiology/cardiovascular surgery service line, surpassing Emory University as the market leader through the following: physician recruitment, development of a Heart Institute, development of a Regional Heart Network through partnerships with referring physicians and hospitals. 3. Significantly strengthened the oncology service line through the establishment of a comprehensive Cancer Treatment Center in partnership with physicians, as well as the implementation of a cancer research program. 4. Significantly strengthened the orthopedic service line through the recruitment of a leading orthopedic practice from a competitor hospital (Piedmont Hospital), the development of an outpatient orthopedic surgical center in partnership with the orthopedic surgeons, and the development of a superb sports medicine program.
