Welcome

Welcome to the Family Medicine Residency Program at Natividad!

Affiliated with the University of California, San Francisco, Natividad is a stand-alone program in a county hospital located in the Salinas Valley, two hours south of San Francisco and a short distance inland from Monterey Bay. We have a total of 30 residents who have primary clinical responsibility for all of their patients. We practice in multiple settings, ranging from our own dedicated clinic to the emergency room, the inpatient medical-surgical units, the intensive care unit, and the skilled nursing facility. Our dedicated faculty takes pride in their supervision of patient care and in their teaching.

We are proud of our mission “to educate residents in the principles and practice of family medicine and prepare them to provide continuous, comprehensive, and culturally-sensitive, contextual care to underserved and rural populations.”  We are one of 8 original family medicine residency programs in California, with particular curricular emphasis on maternity and inpatient care. We also partner with the UCSF Center for Excellence in Primary Care to implement best practices in ambulatory care training, chronic disease management, and interdisciplinary team collaboration. Residents learn and practice quality improvement methods including Plan-Do-Study-Act cycles and root cause analyses.

The Natividad Family Medicine Residency has always been an integral part of the Salinas community. Our dedication to outstanding patient care and broad-based family medicine education is widely recognized in Monterey County. Our longitudinal Community Medicine curriculum teaches advocacy and public  and population health skills to enable residents to serve patients beyond direct clinical care by partnering with community organizations to address health disparities.

We have graduates in many different types of practices that include outpatient family medicine, obstetrics, global health settings and inpatient medicine. We truly believe in developing our residents’ “clinical common sense” and provide well-rounded training to prepare them to work anywhere in the U.S. — or the world! We are also fortunate that many of our alumni remain on the Central Coast, caring for the underserved here in our local area.

Many of our residents have taken a “first look” at what we have to offer by participating in a student clerkship. This option offers an excellent opportunity not only to get acquainted with Natividad from the inside, but also with our community, our area and the people we serve.
