  • October 8, 2015

SALINAS — October 8, 2015 – Natividad Medical Center is happy to announce the hiring of five new faculty members to its highly respected Family Medicine Residency Program.

The five new doctors include two former U.S. Navy flight surgeons, a primary care physician with 14 years of experience, a native of Mexico with extensive medical research, volunteer and teaching experience and a family medicine physician originally from Peru who spent a year providing comprehensive medical care to 2,000 people in the rural areas of Amazonas in Peru.

“We are pleased and honored to have five physicians of this caliber and experience join us on the staff of the residency program here at Natividad,” said Program Director Steven Harrison. “The residency program continues to be a strong, integral part of our community and the presence these five excellent physicians just solidifies our dedication to outstanding patient care and broad-based family medicine education.”

The residency program was founded in 1975 in affiliation with the University of California, San Francisco, which continues to provide support for research and scholarly projects for the Residency Program. The program, officially called Natividad Family Medicine Residency Program, has graduated 229 residents to date.

The program, which currently has 29 residents, provides opportunities to train in a variety of inpatient and ambulatory settings, with most of the patients drawn from Monterey County’s Latino population.
The program’s strengths are in general inpatient care and maternal-child medicine, management of chronic disease and community medicine.  The residents maintain an outpatient practice in the Laurel family practice clinic, which is one of 7 Monterey County Community Clinics run by a community Board and managed by the Monterey County Public Health Department Outpatient Services Division.  The Laurel Family Practice Clinic which recently expanded from 14 exam rooms to 28 exam rooms provides the Family Medicine Residency with capacity to expand the amount of patients seen by residents and faculty from 14,000 per year up to 30,000 per year.  The Public Health Department has been instrumental in moving forward with Natividad Medical Center in advancing forward thinking outpatient care and moving towards the primary care medical home in this setting.  Furthermore, the previous Laurel Women’s Health Clinic is now merged with Family Medicine in the Laurel family practice clinic.
