Living Here

While many employees live close to the hospital in Salinas, we have several other beautiful cities nearby where some of our employees choose to live. Each city has its own special qualities — and activities — to enjoy! Here’s a closer look at what this area has to offer.

Salinas
Salinas is a Central Coast town located just northeast of the beautiful Monterey Bay. It is the major financial, governmental and agricultural center of Monterey County, but still has the feel of a rural community. Its nickname is “The Salad Bowl of the World.” Salinas is also the birthplace of the famous author John Steinbeck.

Monterey
Monterey has a temperate climate, world-class golf courses, and numerous art and music festivals which provide a relaxing way to spend your free weekends! Extensive coastal trails are ideal for biking and rollerblading — or just strolling along the waterfront, enjoying the sea lions romp and watching for whales. The Monterey Bay Aquarium is an added “gem.”

Santa Cruz
Santa Cruz is about 45 minutes northwest of Salinas. The eclectic city of Santa Cruz is famous for its beach boardwalk and Banana Slug mascot of University of California at Santa Cruz. Employees who like surfing, hiking and a laid-back atmosphere are especially drawn to this town.

Pebble Beach
Pebble Beach is a small coastal resort destination, famous for its golf courses.

Carmel by the Sea
Carmel by the Sea is like a European village in the middle of California that offers unique shops and fine dining. For a more relaxed afternoon, grab a cup of coffee and stroll down the white sand beaches.

Big Sur / Highway 1
Coastal Highway (HWY 1) Is one of the most scenic drives in California. The Big Sur Coast Highway hugs the Pacific coast, from Carmel by the Sea and winds south to Los Padres National Forest. Employees have great opportunities for hiking and camping in several state parks along the way. The historic Hearst Castle is along this drive, and is a great place to visit!

Resources & Links

Along with finding an employer that fits your needs, it is also important that it be a good fit for your spouse/partner and family. A good place to start is the Chamber of Commerce website: www.salinaschamber.com.

Housing
Our employees live all over Monterey County, as well as in Santa Cruz and San Jose. Choosing housing in the area really depends on your personal preferences: rent or buy, rural or urban, beach or inland. It’s all available within a 45 minute commute. Naturally, all of these variables will affect how much you will be paying per month.

Employment and Local News
In addition to the nationwide job-search engines, families of our employees can find employment opportunities at www.montereybayhelpwanted.com or just browse through the local newspapers: Montereyherald.com, and Californianonline.com.
