POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Natividad is accepting applications for a full-time permanent Staff Nurse III- Perinatal Nurse Educator in the Women’s & Children’s Division. The Nurse Educator is responsible for educational needs in the Women’s & Children’s Division (including L&D, L&D OR, L&D PACU, OB Triage, Maternal Infant, and Nursery).

Will have proven track record demonstrating the following:  Thorough Knowledge of:
  • Advanced theoretical concepts, principles, techniques and procedures used in professional nursing and health care.
  • Medical terminology, medical instruments and equipment.
  • Routines typical to an acute-care hospital.
  • Mode of action and effects of medicines and narcotics.
  • Federal, State, and local laws and regulations and The Joint Commission (TJC) standards, which govern the nursing practice and delivery of health care.
  • Advanced treatments, drugs and equipment associated with an area of specialization.
  • Principles and practices of quality assurance.
  • Safety policies of quality assurance.
  • Safety policies and procedures related to nursing.
  • Expertise in teaching evidence-based care delivery, nursing processes and
  • Knowledgeable in concepts and can apply concepts of adult education practices.
  • Understanding of competency creation and evaluation
  • Up to date on the latest evidence-based standards of medical and nursing care in Perinatal services.
Working Knowledge of:
  • Principles of supervision, training, directing and evaluating subordinates.
  • Principles of adult education and teaching.
  • Microsoft platforms such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, and similar applications.
Skill and Ability to:
  • Perform specialized and advanced nursing tasks.
  • Utilize staff effectively in the conduct of patient care, studies and projects.
  • Review and edit written reports, policies and procedures, standards of care and quality assurance indicators.
  • Communicate clearly and proficiently both orally and in writing at a level necessary to perform the responsibilities and duties of the position.
  • Keep abreast of developments in area of nursing specialization.
  • Able to perform literature search and review of best practices in perinatal care
  • Demonstrate clinical expertise in perinatal care
Responsible For
Examples of Duties:
  • Assess educational needs of the L&D, MIU, Nursery,  OB Triage, L&D OR and L&D PACU and design & plan programs by working collaboratively with the Director of Women and Children’s Services, Unit Supervising RNs and outside educational resources including but not limited to Fetal monitoring, yearly skills day trainings, competency verification, new staff orientation, new grad orientation, etc.

  • Assist Director in distinguishing between a skill/knowledge deficit or compliance issues with staff and provide education and remediation to staff with educational needs when needed
  • Assists in simulation scenario development specific to L&D, MIU, Nursery,  OB Triage, L&D OR and L&D PACU
  • Serve as super user for point of care, new medical devices, and other new initiatives as appropriate
  • Responsible for tracking and recordkeeping of competency and completed staff education requirements.
  • Provide in depth expertise in the perinatal area of nursing for staff, the department, and the hospital
  • Collaborate with other healthcare providers on care issues.
  • Serve on directed hospital or community committees at the discretion of the Women and Children’s Services Director
  • Act as liaison, in collaboration, for local schools of nursing to facilitate the educational needs for their students
  • Provide in services for nursing students as requested
  • Participate in Unit Based Council(s) and supports the Shared Governance Model
  • Work as staff in clinical areas of expertise to facilitate education staff and maintaining own clinical competence.
  • Apply standards of care to the unit procedures, policies, and practice.
  • Provide resource information to other staff; including precepting and/or orientation to Labor and Delivery, MIU, Newborn Nursery, L&D OR and L&D PACU.
  • Function as a clinical role model for staff
  • Introduce new practice techniques/innovations based on knowledge of evidence based practice standards.
  • Promotes improved quality of patient care
  • Participate and help lead MIU and L&D Performance improvement projects
  • Participate in standardizing and streamlining systems to effectively utilize resources as directed by the Director of Perinatal Services
  • Plan, implement and participate in projects and programs at the discretion of the Director of Perinatal Services
  • Assist in interviewing staff and provides input into evaluations regarding clinical competence
  • Work in collaboration with Supervising RNS & Director of Women and Children’s Services in preparing units for accreditation reviews (Beta Healthcare Group annual visit)
  • Participate in the development and dissemination or implementation of department standards and policies and procedures for nursing care
  • Attend unit staff meeting, acts as recorder, disseminates minutes

Educational Requirements

Examples of Experience/Education/Training:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Required LicensurePossession of a valid California Registered Nurse (RN) license
AND
Required CertificationPossession of BLS,  ACLS & NRP
STABLE certification is recommended
Experience: Two Years experience as a registered nurse in the hiring unit with experience with circulating. Proficiency in AORN guidelines and OB Scrub competency is highly desired
