SALINAS, CA (July 5, 2016) – The program is called Fresh Produce Prescription and offers families with diet-related illnesses incentives for healthy eating. The vouchers can be used toward the purchase of fruits and vegetables.

The Laurel Pediatrics Clinic of the Monterey County Health Department hosts the program, a partnership of the hospital, Health Department and Everyone’s Harvest, which operates five certified farmers’ markets in Monterey County, including Natividad’s.

The market offers fruits and vegetables (many certified organic), flowers, plants, and gifts from small-scale family farmers and local independent businesses.

Organizers said in a press release that families that partake weekly can have their Body Mass Indicators measured at the clinic to mark their progress. So far, 21 families are participating.

Families are also encouraged to participate in the Edible Education and Market Match programs at Natividad.
