The Natividad Family Medicine Residency offers a full-spectrum training experience tailored to residents who are passionate about making an impact on underserved communities. Our residency was founded more than 50 years ago at Monterey county’s safety-net hospital, an institution committed to the mission of caring for everyone in our community and addressing health disparities affecting immigrant farmworkers.
Natividad is located in Salinas, population 160,000, located 2 hours south of San Francisco and 8 miles from the Pacific Ocean. We are a single-residency hospital, where family medicine residents are empowered to learn full spectrum family medicine and take ownership of their patients’ care in all clinical settings. We recruit residents from diverse backgrounds with a commitment to advocacy for our underserved patient population. Many of our patients work in the fields and packing houses, where they harvest – by hand -the majority of lettuce, broccoli and strawberries grown in the United States.
Residents hone their outpatient family medicine skills in our continuity clinic, an FQHC that serves primarily Latinx farmworkers and other marginalized communities. Our clinic provides care for patients of all ages with comprehensive services that include office procedures, prenatal care, community health workers, Behavioral Health Services and point of care ultrasound. Our program is also distinguished by a robust inpatient family medicine teaching service, high volume and high risk obstetrics training, RHEDI program with opt-out abortion training, and a longitudinal community medicine curriculum through which residents develop innovative projects aimed at addressing social determinants of health that affect our community.
Natividad residents receive strong training in:
- Hospital Medicine and Critical Care
- High risk Obstetrical Care taught collaboratively by Family Physicians and Ob/Gyn’s
- Inpatient Pediatrics with 24-hour coverage by in-house pediatric hospitalists
- Emergency Medicine
- Office and hospital procedures, as well as surgical assisting
- Local and international electives
- Night float system<
- Certifications in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Advanced Life Support for Obstetrics (ALSO), and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
We are incredibly fortunate to live and learn in a beautiful location, with a year-round temperate Mediterranean climate and gorgeous scenery that inspired the writings of John Steinbeck. From Salinas it’s a short drive to the ocean, to the mountains, and to wine country. Our neighboring towns and cities include Monterey (20 miles away), Carmel-by-the-Sea (25 miles), Santa Cruz (38 miles), Big Sur (45 miles), San Jose (i.e. the Silicon Valley, 60 miles away), and San Francisco (100 miles).
