Salary and Benefits

Annual Salary: Annual salary is competitive within our region, negotiated by our Resident Union, SEIU Local 521. For Academic Year 2026-2027:

  • PGY-1 Base rate: $ 81,684 (plus $7000 relocation stipend) 
  • PGY-2 Base rate: $ 85,812 
  • PGY-3 Base rate: $ 91,596 

Relocation Assistance: $7000 stipend, paid in first pay period in August of year one.

Educational stipend: $2250 annually

Bilingual pay: $1404 (must pass Spanish proficiency test)  Primary: $54/pp = $1404; Provisional: $30/pp = $780

Multilingual Pay: $600 ($50 per month) for each of the following languages (must have certified proficiency) : Triqui, Chatino, Zapoteco, Mixteco, American Sign Language (ASL) 

Cell phone stipend: $1080 per year (max for “exceptionally high usage”)

Meals:  Free meals in Hospital Cafeteria (up to $430 per month), prepared meals and snacks available 24/7 in Resident Lounge. Shopping list from Natividad’s dietary department (up to $175 per month). 

Mileage reimbursement: for educational activities or rotations off campus – mileage reimbursement based on GSA rates

Health Insurance: Natividad offers low-cost health insurance plans for residents to choose from.

Dental Insurance: Included with Insurance for residents. Additional cost may apply if enrolling dependents. 

Vision Insurance: Included with Insurance for residents. Additional cost may apply if enrolling dependents. 

Life Insurance: $20,000 Group term life insurance for residents.

Short term disability insurance: Residents should be enrolled in the State Disability Income (SDI) protection plan. This will be at their own expense. The SDI benefit will be integrated with County accrued leave. 

Long term disability Insurance: Available through payroll deduction.

Malpractice/ Liability Insurance: Professional liability insurance is provided by Monterey County to cover residents performing duties within the course and scope of their appointments.

Current limits are as follows: 

  • $1 Million per occurrence (maximum amount per single claim/incident). 
  • $3 Million aggregate per policy per year (Maximum total amount the insurer will pay for all single claims in a single year). 

Vacation & Holiday Leave:  Full-time residents will receive 35 days of Paid Time Off (PTO) in their first year. Subsequently, residents will receive 32 days of PTO each year thereafter upon promotion into their second and third years of residency  (in accordance with ACGME limits on time away from residency). Unused days can be paid out annually or at graduation.  

Education Leave: PGY1 have 3 days, and PGY2 and PGY3 have 5 days of Educational leave each year to be used for conferences, education use, and for job interviews in year 3. Subject to approval – hours are not auto loaded
